Kit - Ranunculus by Midori Hirose in AFS Empire
Kit - Ranunculus by Midori Hirose in AFS Empire
The Ranunculus pattern by Midori Hirose is well known in the knitting world as one of the most adaptable patterns out there. With an oversize gauge and several options such as yarn weight, long or short-sleeves and a wide or narrow neckline, you have the freedom to truly make this sweater your own.
While this pattern is gorgeous in just about any yarn, we love how it knits up in luxurious Empire by Apple Fiber Studio. The shine from Empire's silk core make the textured lace stitches pop, and the drape is absolutely stunning. This isn't a sweater meant for hiking, this is a top to wear when you want to feel dressy, but still be comfortable - perfect for special occasions.
Kit includes:
- 2 skeins of Empire by AFS (enough to knit any size according to pattern).
- You must purchase the pattern separately on Ravelry. Please note: due to the numerous options included in the pattern, the pattern itself is 15 pages long - don't be intimidated :)
- Kit does not include needles. Ranunculus calls for US 8 and US 10 circular needles.
Some Tips from Christiane:
- Don't be afraid to play with gauge - this pattern is originally written to be over-size, so small adjustments are generally forgiving. If you do a gauge swatch and are unsure if it will work, just call or come into the shop and ask us for help. We also are happy to arrange a 1-on-1 session where we can go in-depth on gauge and tackle any other questions you might have on this pattern.
- Some techniques are changeable - I've made this pattern 4 times now, and only once did I use the recommended cast-on method. For all of the others I just used my favorite CO.
- Use removable stitch markers at 4 points (or more) around the sweater - particularly marking the center front/back and sides. While working the textured stitches in the yoke, pause at each marker and do a quick check to ensure you are still on-pattern (i.e. that you didn't accidentally knit extra stitches or miss an increase). This can help prevent you from ending a row and realizing you missed something at the beginning of the round and need to go all the way back.
- Take a moment to read through the pattern before you start - and take advantage of the short video tutorials Midori Hirose provides on their Ravelry page for the pattern. If there is anything that doesn't seem clear, just look it up! You will be glad you did :)
- Most of all, have fun! Don't be afraid to use a lifeline periodically to take any pressure you might feel off your mind. Knitting is supposed to be relaxing, after all!
