It might be just me, but I think collections of yarn are pretty. Just one visit to Pinterest and you'll quickly learn that you're not alone. My favorite way to store yarn is magazine holders. They keep your yarn nice and neat and visible; we even use this method for storage at Apple Yarns, sometimes placing yarn in clear bags and then placing them in the magazine holder vertically. Magazine holders can easily be found at big box stores including IKEA but my favorite place is Goodwill. You would be amazed how many people donate unused magazine holders. Another fun storage idea is paper towel holders. We use paper towel holders for display and organization.
If it all gets too much, there's always Stash Buster; a once a year yarn consignment at Apple Yarns. We collect yarn, notions and books the month of July and the sale starts the first say of August and goes thru Labor Day. The below image from the third week of July and covers a space of 9' x 15'.
